Betty Godwin Mitchell is an artist specializing in realistic oil paintings of the classic floral still life and the South Atlantic beach scene. She paints to sell but also for the pure enjoyment of creating beauty. Her works are characterized by elegance and a sophisticated sense of color and composition. The great painter of the past whom she most admires is the Frenchman, Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904).

Several of Betty's oils have been issued in limited edition reproductions. Some are still available, and more are planned for the future. Betty also works in watercolors and has done countless pencil portraits. In addition to her painting and drawing, Betty is a skilled sculptor. Her bronze portrait head of the Civil War hero and submarine inventor Horace Lawson Hunley is in the permanent collection of the U.S. Naval Museum in Washington. She has also done heads of Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfree, Ollie North, and David Hartman.

Betty was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was a florist, and from him Betty acquired her love and knowledge of flowers. Her mother's interest in genealogy gave Betty her strong appreciation of family values and tradition. Under these influences, she began to draw at an early age.

She is a graduate of the Memphis Academy of Art with a BFA degree. After art school she earned a BS in Art Education at the University of Tennessee. Betty is married, the mother of three children, grandmother of one, and lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a city known for its interest in all the arts.
